Extraordinary History
Transgender in The Netherlands
The exhibition 'Extraordinary History. Transgender in the Netherlands' tells the story of the long road from rejection and prejudice toward emancipation and recognition.
The exhibition is constructed of reusable scaffolding tubes over which canvases of different transparency hang in layers, symbolizing concealment. The story is told in six periods, each with its own ambassador on meter-high portraits. A curtain fabric was selected for each period, representing time, which becomes increasingly transparent. The canvases also become shorter: the image becomes more open.
The exhibition travels through different locations and is designed to be flexible for that reason. The exhibition can shape itself to the space like a snake (shown on the 6 floor plans below). Although the exhibition is eye-catching, it can be stored very compactly and transported in a small van.
