The Great Suriname Exhibition
"This exhibition does overdue maintenance of our collective memory. It allows voices to be heard that have not been heard before, here in the heart of the city. An exhibition that does not avoid the painful history, but also shows the strength and beauty of Suriname."
In eight spectacular pavilions, visitors travel through the country and its history. Over three hundred objects are presented in their context: archaeological finds, historical photographs and documents, garments, contemporary art, film and music clips and applied art.
The exhibition design blends into, and connects with, the architecture of The New Church. The height, routing and even materialisation of the church participate in the spatial narrative. Monumental blow-ups form the backbone of the various themed pavilions. A custom theatrical scenography was then designed for each space.
